Self care continues to soar in popularity in 2024 and I’m excited to share this self-care checklist. After a few years of world-wide struggles (cue the spicy cough) and work pressures, perhaps we feel more burnt out than in previous years…
Although I enjoy ‘self-care’ I don’t believe that self-care on its own is fulfilling. As humans we are designed for so much more than ourselves. “Refresh others and you yourlself will be refreshed” (Proverbs 11:25).
Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Prov 11.25
While I advocate that giving, loving, and serving others is essential for living, here are a few of my go-to products and places that have helped me unwind and refresh – mostly from home: This is ultimately a self-care checklist for your mind as well as your body. Especially as a mum, I’ve found it is so important to have times to pause and refuel as I am in a role of caring for my little one all day.
Without further ado… here’s my self-care checklist:
Moments
- Book in a time to connect with and laugh with friends. A favourite card game to encourage deep connection is We’re Not Really Strangers
- Spend 7 minutes in silence or in prayer
- Prioritise good sleep. Preparing for sleep 90 minutes before heading to bed is essential: Turn off your phone and computer, slip on comfy PJS, put some lavender essential oil on your wrists LINK,
- Take a cold shower
- Breathe deeply (4 breaths in, hold for 7, out for 8).
- Have a phone-free day
- Wash your sheets
- Have a power nap
- Listen to your favourite song
- Read the Bible
Food
- Lemon water
- Fresh bowl of strawberries & blueberries and greek yoghurt
- Bliss ball (one of my favourites are blended almonds, dates, chia seeds and vanilla essence).
- Cucumber, carrots and hummus
- A healthy cacao hot chocolate
- A green smoothie (banana, coconut water, dates, avocado, mango is always delicious)
Products for self-care
- Dry brush. I love dry brushing; not only does it feel relaxing but it also stimulates the lymphatic system which in turn flushes toxins from our body. It’s important to drink lots of water after dry brushing to encourage the toxins to leave the body.
- Tea. Teas that are good for detoxing and relaxation: lavender, chamomile, peppermint are my favourites. You could also try a bath tea for self care!
- Nail polish. And a foot scrubber – the sweet lady I recently had a pedicure from swears by these!
- Hair and face mask (coconut oil on hair is a favourite for my hair and a homemade face mask
Places
- There’s nothing better than a fresh ocean breeze, a good book and a towel and laying on the sand.
- Read poetry at your local bookstore
- A forest. Grab a picnic blanket and soak in all the sound of the forest. Did you know that forest air is healing?
- Get a pedicure with a friend
- Sip a delicious drink at your favourite cafe
Finally, I hope you love these tips as much as I enjoyed putting them together. Let me know which ones you’ve tried and what some of your go-to favourites are.
Remember, taking care of yourself is just one very small aspect of refuelling your soul. It is equally important to love others; you are created for connection! John 13:34.
